Calling all Wizards & Thrill seekers
Planning a trip to Universal Orlando can feel just as exciting -and just as overwhelming- as the parks themselves. With three theme parks packed full of blockbuster rides, immersive lands, shows, and dining, knowing how to tackle it all can make the difference between a good vacation and an unforgettable one. That’s where this Universal Orlando Theme Park guide comes in. From smart planning strategies to time-saving itineraries and 25 insider tips, which are designed to help you maximize and experience more of what makes Universal truly EPIC.

Let’s break down Universal’s parks.
EPIC
Epic, the newest park, is immersive and impressive, offering adventures through Nintendo World, flights with Dragons, Dark Universe, and Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic. Due to high demand and long wait times, Express Passes are highly recommended to make the most of your visit and experience more attractions, as they allow you to bypass regular lines and maximize your time in the park.

Islands of Adventure
Islands of Adventure features the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, complete with Hogwarts castle, the charming snow-topped village of Hogsmeade, and Hagrid’s thrilling new motorbike ride. You’ll also find dinosaurs on Jurassic Park’s VelociCoaster, as well as popular attractions like Dr. Seuss Landing and the Hulk Coaster. The park is also home to Mythos, widely regarded as the world’s best theme park restaurant.

Universal Studios
Universal Studios features notable attractions such as the fire-breathing dragon at Gringotts in Diagon Alley, the Mummy ride, and the Minion rides.
City Walk
City Walk features a collection of restaurants located just outside Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, offering a lively atmosphere with music and entertainment. A newly opened Harry Potter store means you can enjoy butterbeer without needing a park ticket.
Universal Travel Guide
Whether it’s saving time or planning smarter, these Universal tips will improve your vacation. Like all theme park visits, bring a water bottle, portable charger, and comfortable shoes.
1. Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios in Florida can be visited in a day. The parks are connected, so buy a park-to-park ticket. Epic needs an entire day due to longer lines for fewer rides and bigger crowds.
Universal app
2. Download the Official Universal Orlando App. From checking ride wait times, show times, to placing mobile orders, and even tracking parking, the app is your friend. Visit the app and understand how to use it before arriving in the park. Reminder, don’t forget your battery charger or fuel rods.

Hotel
3. You don’t have to stay at Universal hotels—all guests can purchase skip-the-line passes and make restaurant reservations at the same time However, Universal hotel guests receive perks like early park entry by an hour (which saves you about two hours waiting in line for the most popular ride) and complimentary shuttle service. If you stay off property, you can still arrive before opening, complete bag checks and ticketing, and wait inside until the park opens. Since most visitors go to both Disney and Universal, I suggest staying at a Disney hotel to book dining and skip the line passes earlier for Disney. Booking a Premier hotel also includes an Express Pass Unlimited (skip-the-line pass) for everyone in your room.
When to Visit
4. For fewer crowds, plan your visit on weekdays, during September, and steer clear of weeks with holidays or school vacations.
Skip the Lines
5. Epic offers fewer rides and attractions than the other parks, which often leads to hours-long wait times for most attractions. Buy the EPIC Express Passes to skip the lines. These passes sell out, so buy them early. While bypassing lines is always convenient, it’s not as essential when visiting Universal Islands or Studios.

Arrival
6. Parks open at least 30 minutes before their official early opening time. Since parking and going through bag check takes about half an hour, arrive an hour early. City Walk features Starbucks and Voodoo Doughnuts, so you can enjoy breakfast while waiting for the park gates to open. I use the 30 minutes to take photos at the entrance and take a bathroom break. Every day is different, but EPIC opened almost an hour before the scheduled early opening time when we visited.
Restaurants
7. Try eating earlier to skip the long lines. We had meals at 11 am and 4:30 pm to avoid crowds. Being tired and hungry is never fun, so it’s smart to schedule your breaks. Universal, much like Disney, is accommodating when it comes to dietary restrictions and allergies. Take this time to enjoy good conversations and connect with those you care about during a pleasant break. I see so many families exhausted and grumpy at the end of the day. The extra ride isn’t worth it, so take breaks.

Grinch
8. The Universal Islands Park Grinch Breakfast sells out in 1-2 days when it opens in November. The holiday lines to meet the Grinch in the park never dip below 2 hours. Y’all, this is the REAL Grinch teasing the guest and bringing laughter along with a few Whos to visit. The time is spent one-on-one, with cute photos and backdrops, not a quick stop by your table. Get your $60 “Go Away ticket,” so you can bring your “uninvited” self to meet the Grinch.

Chocolate Emporium
9. The best dining in City Walk is The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium for elaborate, chocolate-centric milkshakes, a savory menu, all wrapped in a whimsical chocolate factory ambiance that’s affordable. Their famous melting hot chocolate almond bread with salted caramel butter is the best bread of my life. If you are eating with me, you’ll need to order your own loaf, as I’ve come for this. Just make your reservation and have desserts for dinner after all, this is a vacation.

Mythos
10. Mythos in Islands of Adventure has won “World’s Best Theme Park Restaurant” for a decade, with a Greek god atmosphere and quality diverse food to back up the awards. Y’all, this place has waterfalls, ancient figures, and ornate pillars. It feels like dining in Zeus’s palace. It’s not quick service or cheap, so take a rest and enjoy the splurge. However, it will ruin you for all the other chaotic quick-serve options.

Toad Stool Cafe
11. The Toad Stool Café in Epic’s Nintendo World opens reservations at park opening. The link for reservations can be Googled instead of walking over to the restaurant for the link. It’s an immersive, quick-serve restaurant with Mario-themed food like a Mario Burger and Mushroom soup. The vibrant setting looks like Toad’s house, complete with windows showing animated Mushroom Kingdom scenes and Chef Toad cooking. The elements change from light to dark, sunny to stormy, and it’s super fun.
Everywhere we ate inside Epic was a step above any theme park food. Pizza Moon and Das Stakehause were really good as well.

Ride Hacks
12. Hagrid’s is the best ride in Islands of Adventure, but the line stays at two and a half hours or more. So, jump on VelociCoaster when the ride is empty at park opening, then head to Hagrid’s. Everyone leaves Hagrid’s and goes to VelociCoaster (average wait of 90 minutes). Enjoy a ride on VelociCoaster at park opening and closing. There is no “riding Hagrid’s last.” They close the line by 5:30 pm on some days, so it doesn’t stay running hours past park closing.

Hogwarts Train
13. The Hogwarts Express Train between the two parks is NOT a thrill ride. You must have the ticket with access to both parks to ride. It’s literally a train booth with a moving screen window. I’m not sure why the wait is always over an hour. It’s nice to experience once, but when I see two-hour waits, I just shake my head.
14. The Villain-Con Minion Blast is not a ride, just a little walk-through shooting gallery. People stop at the first ride they see, so this can result in an over an hour wait for no ride. We will walk through with a 10-minute wait, but that’s it.
Single Rider Line
15. Single Rider Lines can save you hours. Gringotts had a 90-minute wait, so we walked on using the single-rider line. You will be split up so small children can’t do this. Several times, we all ended up on the same ride, so it is fantastic for teenagers.
Ride Preparedness
16. Bring ponchos and dry socks for the water rides to avoid walking around soaked. The human dryers run for $5 a cycle. Plus, it rains frequently in Florida in the afternoons, so ponchos are always a good idea.
17. Check ride height restrictions before leaving home to avoid meltdowns at the park. Universal is geared more toward thrill rides that have taller height requirements than Disney. Child swap is available if your party wants to ride and the child is not able. One person rides, then swaps, so the other person can ride without extra waiting. Warning: if the child is nervous about coasters, don’t start the day with the level 10s like Star Dust or VelociCoaster unless you want that to be the last coaster of the day.
18. Bring motion sickness medication such as Non-drowsy Dramamine with meclizine as the active ingredient.
Butterbeer & Wands
19. You came for BUTTERBEER! In Diagon Alley (Studios), most people line up at the cute shop near the fire-breathing dragon, Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, for the famous butterbeer ice cream. There’s a traditional butterbeer stand around the corner to the right that saves you an hour wait. If you want a place to sit because it’s crowded, try the steps to the left of the dragon behind Hagrid’s motorbike photo opp.

As far as types of Butterbeer go, you can’t go wrong with frozen, original, or hot. Frozen is too cold for me, so I prefer the original.
The butterbeer ice cream isn’t as good to me as the drinks.
All the Wizarding World Restaurants sell different forms of butterbeer.
Hogsmeade by the castle (Islands) has several stands for butterbeer.
20. Epic has the most amazing butterbeer crepes at Café L’air De La Sirene. Y’all, these crepes are everything I dreamed they would be! These are delicate French crepes filled with rich shortbread cookie butter, Bavarian cream, and creamy Butterbeer filling, topped with strawberries and Butterbeer drizzle. I’ll dream about these crepes all year.

21. If you have little wizards, then go to Ollivander’s Wand Shop and get them a magic, interactive wand. If they don’t want to wait for Ollivander’s magical experience, you can buy wands in other stores. Being a wizard is worth the investment of time and money. The use of magic spells in the windows and activities provides an engaging and enjoyable experience. All three of the Wizarding parks have wand activities. Come on, let’s unlock the suitcases and find the Niffler’s stolen jewelry, boil cauldrons, light the lanterns, and make objects move since you are finally a REAL WIZARD. However, you must perform the spell correctly. Use small, deliberate movements and not general wand waving. Make sure your child is old enough to be a wizard.

Lockers & Backpacks
22. The roller coasters with free lockers at Universal are SMALL, about 5 inches tall. I struggled getting my Disney backpack into the locker. I would suggest a sling bag that gives and lays flat. Some rides (Hulk, VelociCoaster, & Star Dust) have metal detectors, so phones and keys must be placed in lockers. In Epic, the lockers use facial recognition to open. Just walk up and your locker swings open. Let’s give these design people a round of applause.
23. In Universal Islands and Studios, get a paper locker ticket from an attendant in the locker area. This ticket can be used all day on all rides. We gave the most responsible person the paper locker ticket. They kept it in a zipper pocket. I kept wanting to put it back in my bag that I was placing in the locker.
Itineraries
24. Have a Plan
Every trip has a different itinerary and priorities depending on the travelers. I’ll give you a quick look at my itinerary for traveling with teenagers.

One Day ticket to Universal Islands of Adventure and Studios
- Without early park entry, I arrived at 8:00 a.m. for the 9:00 a.m. opening.
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster– 15 min wait for the BEST coaster, paper locker ticket
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike– most popular ride, expect a 2-hour wait or longer ALL day, the queue is creative and enjoyable, so it’s worth it. It’s everyone’s first ride of the day. We went an hour before the park closed to ride again, and the line was closed off for the day.

- 11:30 am-Lunch at Mythos – expect 70 minutes
- Hulk Coaster– 45 minutes
- Spiderman -15 minutes, for a 3-D ride fighting villains
- Race through New York City- 30 minutes and a cute 3-D ride
- Revenge of the Mummy Coaster– 30 minutes
- Escape from Gringotts – single rider- 30 minutes- stand-by line is usually over an hour, but it’s worth it.
- Butterbeer- 30 minutes
- Minions ride
- 4:45 pm -Dinner at The Chocolate Emporium- for the Chocolate Almond Bread and desserts
- Dr. Seuss area for Cat in the Hat or the Caro-Seuss-el
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey- known as the Castle ride- 30 minutes
- VelociCoaster- 35 minutes
- The park closed at 7 pm.

Epic Itinerary
25. EPIC GAME PLAN with EXPRESS passes, no early entry
We had half the number of steps at Epic compared to the other Universal parks and Disney. Before you start applauding the development team, there’s no sun shade, and most rides are outdoors. I’m never coming in the summer with heat and rain delays. However, the second week in December was complete perfection.
Arrived at 7:45 am for the 9 am early opening (some days it opens at 8 am). Once inside, I made Toad Stool Cafe reservations. Once you exit the portal and step into each magical world, it’s a circular layout, so go left. The bathrooms are top-notch, but only one bathroom per world, so stop when you find it.
“Beyond this gate find gardens green, and epic worlds to fill your dreams.”

Ministry of Magic
- 9am-The Ministry of Magic allows EVERYONE to line up at 9 am. Expect delays, and I would not wait more than two hours. The queue is better than the actual ride. Our group voted the actual ride tied with the Castle ride, below Hagrid’s and Gringotts. Whatever you do, don’t spend 4-5 hours in here. See the Ministry section of the queue when it keeps breaking down, leave.
“For in dreams we enter a world that is entirely our own.” Dumbledore

- 11 am for a quick serve stop at Café L’ air De La Sirene for Butterbeer Crepes, which are amazing. Plus all the fun, colored drinks like Plum juice and butterbeer. This restaurant is so magical and beautifully detailed that it enhances the Paris experience, dining inside or out.
- The Mythical Creatures Show, Cirque Arcanus, received five stars from everyone in our group. If I had to choose, the Dragon show is better. We saved this for last, if we had time.

Star Dust
- 11:45 -Next, the Star Dust Coaster is WILD. It’s easily the most extreme coaster I have ever been on. It’s time to fly backwards and twist while upside down, and it lasts forever. Will all adrenaline junkies please line up? The line is never that long because everybody is scared. Once you get a reputation for killing someone, nobody wants to try you.

Dragons
- 12 pm -2 pm- Dragon Land with Hiccup’s Wing Glider, the roller coaster over the water that swoops, dives, and launches you at 45 miles per hour speeds has mid-level thrills with scenic views of the Isle of Berk. The Untrainable Dragon Show has flying Toothless, so it’s fantastic. The lines are hours long, but you can meet Toothless. Make sure to place a mobile order for a famous mac & cheese cone at Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel or Spit Fyre Grill. Mead Hall is where Vikings feast on meat and fish with a Thawfest Platter.

Nintendo World
Here we go!
- 2-4 pm- Enter Super Nintendo World, then ride Browser’s Challenge and Donkey Kong’s Mine Cart Madness with a snack at Toad Stool Café. All four of our orders at Toad Stool were delicious and creatively cute, but I liked my cheesy garlic knots the best. Dong Kong is better than Browsers, if you have to choose. Nintendo Land is a LOT of stimulation and very crowded. With EARLY ENTRY, Nintendo is your first stop due to crowds! The kids can buy interactive wristbands, Power-UP Bands, to collect coins, track ride scores and play games that interact with the Universal app. The bathroom is by Donkey Kong. The popular DK Crush Float, a tropical banana soft serve float with a waffle bowl, is found at The Bubbly Barrel

Dark Universe
- 4:30 pm- 7 pm- Dark Universe has a Werewolf (coaster) and a Frankenstein ride. These are fantastic rides that easily hit our top five list of things to do. After those, head to dinner in a vampire-themed haunted restaurant, Das Stakehaus, with coffins and brains for dessert. Dark Universe is impressive. I loved seeing the details at dusk. The fire and smoke in the creepy dark were captivating. Y’all, I don’t like scary experiences, but I loved this mad science and monster atmosphere.

- 7-9 pm- Star Dust Coaster at night amplifies the feeling of racing through the stars.
- The Constellation Carousel is even more fun with 360-degree spins, and animals lifting over 6 feet.
- We ended the day with The Mythical Creatures Show in Paris.
Epic is a mind-blowing park and is worth every dollar to experience all the rides, shows, and restaurants with Express Passes.
