• My best planning tips are to rent the convertible, ride the coast, and see the BIG TREES.
• San Francisco is in the middle of the state. It is the easiest city to set out exploring the national parks in the north and south. Round-trip flights are also cheaper.
• Bring a sweatshirt and jacket, since it’s always chilly at some point.
• Book national park lodging and tickets for attractions as early as possible due to crowds.
• Buy the America the Beautiful annual Pass to save money. This is a great option if you plan to visit three national parks in a year.

Best Time of Year for a California Road Trip

April to June and September to October

These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and ideal conditions for both coastal and inland travel. Summer is perfect for beaches and festivals, but can be crowded, while winter brings snow to the mountains and mild temperatures to much of the coast.

How long do you need for a California Road Trip?

It depends on your bucket list. I have done 2 slow road trips at 14 days each, and haven’t checked off my entire bucket list. It’s a big state, so at least 7 to 10 days. I did a trip flying in and out of San Francisco and another with flights out of LA.

If you want to hit all the National Parks in one trip, it’s a 14-day trip. Alternatively, it involves over 7 hours of driving each day for a week-long trip to all the National Parks. San Francisco is your airport in the middle, go north then head south.

California Road Trip Itineraries

It’s impossible to see all of California in one vacation. So, I’ll give you three options. Each focuses on one National Park per trip. I’ll add where to stay on your California Road Trip into the last two options.

7 Day California Road Trip Itinerary

The main focus is on Yosemite and Hwy 1.

Day 1: San Francisco
Explore Fisherman’s Wharf, ride a cable car, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, and enjoy dinner in North Beach.

Day 2: Big Sur & Carmel
Drive Highway 1 for 2 hours, stopping at scenic overlooks. Visit McWay Falls, lunch with views at Nepenthe, and end the day in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Overnight in Monterey for the next two nights.

Day 3: Monterey & Pacific Coast
Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium and enjoy the 17-Mile coastal trail and a whale-watching tour. Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the most beautiful courses in the world. The Lone Cypress Tree, along with Pebble Beach, is on the 17-Mile private drive.

Day 4: Yosemite National Park
Travel inland 3.5 hours to Yosemite. Spend the afternoon at Yosemite Valley, viewing El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall. Overnight in Yosemite National Park for tonight and tomorrow.

Day 5: Yosemite Exploration
Hike among giant sequoias, visit Glacier Point, or relax by the Merced River.

With extra time, visit Mono Lake.

Day 6: Los Angeles
Drive 4.5 hours south to Los Angeles. Visit Hollywood, Griffith Observatory, and Santa Monica Beach.

Alternate plan: To save money on flights and rental cars, head back to San Francisco and visit the zoo or Alcatraz.

Day 7: Southern California Relaxation
Enjoy beach time, explore Beverly Hills, or visit Disneyland or coastal towns like Laguna Beach. Fly out of LA.

7-10 Day California Road Trip Itinerary

Kid-focused with the Sequoia National Park, LA, and San Diego

I let my boys help plan this trip, and their goals were to see the best zoos in the world, visit California Adventure, sit under the “REAL” Harry Potter sorting hat, and see the world’s biggest trees. It’s easy to swap a zoo day for a sporting event with teenagers.

Day 1- Los Angeles arrival

Visit Santa Monica for beach time, walk on the Santa Monica Pier, and shop on 3^rd Street Promenade. Rent bikes and ride “The Strand” through Long Beach and Muscle Beach.

Spend 2 nights in Santa Monica. Choose the Pierside Santa Monica for a budget option. Alternatively, select Shutters on the Beach for a premium option.

Day 2- Santa Monica

Beach time and a stroll through Beverly Hills, Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, and see the mammoth at La Brea Tar Pits. My guys love dinosaurs, so prehistoric fossil excavation put La Brea on the itinerary. Honestly, I LOVE Santa Monica and could have stayed all summer.

Day 3– Disneyland

Drive an hour to spend the day with Mickey and Mater. Overnight in Anaheim at the Best Western Plus Park Place Inn Mini Suites across the street from Disneyland.

It’s easy to add a day for more theme parks or sporting events. If you need to cut two days, head north to Warner Bros. on Day 4.

Day 4 – San Diego Safari Park

Drive 1.5 hours to the San Diego Safari Park, near Oceanside.

We added a couple of days to this trip by stopping and visiting the beach in Oceanside. After a few hard days, I knew the boys would need a rest. Plus, I came to experience California’s beaches. So, add a rest day or drive the hour to San Diego for an overnight. In San Diego, we stayed at the Hotel del Coronado on the beach. It’s historic and a destination by itself.

Why visit the San Diego Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo? The babies are mainly kept in the Safari Park, and we went to see the baby tigers. The San Diego Zoo has Koala’s and Giant Panda’s, so I’m going. Was it worth it to spend time in both? Absolutely!

TRAFFIC WARNING: A one-hour drive to San Diego at night can take three hours during the morning rush hour.

Day 5- San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo takes up most of the day. Next, we headed to Point Loma for tide pooling, with a quick stop at Cabrillo National Monument for the views. Finally, we overnighted at the La Jolla Beach Club to see the seals in La Jolla Cove.

With more time, explore San Diego Old Town and Balboa Park.

Day 6- Warner Bros. Studio Tour

Time to sleep in, enjoy the beach, then check out at 10 am. Drive north for 2.5 hours to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour for Harry Potter, Batman, Big Bang, and Friends set tours. The tour last about three hours and buy tickets ($80) as early as possible. We had dinner at a Hollywood Classic, Smoke House in Burbank. We continued north another 2 hours to Bakersfield to overnight.

Day 7- Sequoia National Park

Grab a map and spend the day exploring Giant Forest Grove. Meet General Sherman, the Largest Tree in the World. Hike more trails and see the views from Moro Rock. Overnight in the park at Wuksachi Lodge.

Day 8: Sequoia National Park

We hiked the Congress Trail, visited the bears in Crescent Meadow, and then drove back 4 hours to LA. We had a 7 pm flight out of LA.

Easily add another day to explore the park then travel back to LA.

7-14 Day California Road Trip Itinerary

Highway 1, San Francisco, and the Redwood Tree are our focus. Stretching the trip from seven days to 14 adds Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks.

Day 1- Arrive in San Francisco

We spent the afternoon on the Santa Cruz boardwalk and the beach. The beach is the perfect way to kick off any vacation. Drive for 1 hour to Pacific Grove and overnight for 3 nights at the Seven Gables Inn if you are traveling with 2 people. Traveling with the boys, I would be over at the Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages.

Day 2- Monterey

Explore Pacific Grove for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, whale watching cruise, drive the private toll road called the 17-Mile Drive between Monterey and Carmel to visit Pebble Beach and the Lone Cypress Tree, and end the day on the beach in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Day 3- Hwy 1 the Big Sur

Spend the day exploring Highway 1 with the Big Sur, Point Lobos, the Bixby Bridge, and Pfeiffer Beach. Pfeiffer Beach has limited parking, and the lot fills up early. Nepenthe is the famous cliff-top restaurant known for spectacular panoramic views, so plan to wait in line for lunch.

If you want the 14 Day California Road Trip, add 4-5 days here. You are four hours from Sequoia National Park, which is 2.5 hours from Yosemite. You would need to book park lodging in both parks as soon as possible. After exploring the parks, arrive in San Francisco.

Day 4- San Francisco

Drive three hours to San Francisco. With extra time, stop at Half Moon Bay.

We will spend the next two nights in San Francisco at the Hilton in Union Square. It’s time for shopping and exploring Union Square, and finding Lombard Street (the Crookedest street in the World).

Sunset in San Francisco

For sunset, we went to Baker Beach for views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Other options for a San Francisco sunset are Bernal Heights for a 360-degree view of the city, Cityscape Lounge at the Hilton in Union Square, or the Red and White Fleet’s Sunset Cruise on the bay.

Day 5- Alcatraz & Pier 39 & the Golden Gate Bridge

We did a 3-hour Alcatraz Island prison tour ($55), and it’s fascinating. Listening to the audio tour that comes with your ticket and bringing a coat is a must.

Since we are here at Pier 33 after our Alcatraz tour, visit Pier 39 to see sea lions, walk around the Fisherman’s Wharf area, shop (over 90 specialty shops), and ride a cable car around the city.

The cable car is around $9 and picks up in Fisherman’s Wharf and drops off in Union Square. Finally, we rode a bus to the Welcome Center. We walked across the Golden Gate Bridge as far as we wanted to go. Remember to bring a jacket. The Golden Gate Park is huge (over 1,000 acres) with museums, Stowe Lake, and beautiful gardens.

Day 6- Point Reyes & Mendocino

After breakfast, drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and head north for 1.5 hours to Point Reyes National Seashore and the San Andreas Fault. I could spend all day on Drake’s Beach and hiking these trails. I needed more time to stop in Muir Woods, which is just north of San Francisco.

We drove through the renowned Sonoma Valley and the wineries. After 3.5 hours, we finally arrived in charming Mendocino and walked around the town. We had dinner at Café Beaujolais, one of the most historic and famous restaurants in the area. I absolutely fell in love with all the tide pools, the sweeping cliff views, and the adorable homes, and tried to move here.

We loved staying at the Heritage House Resort and Spa, a few minutes outside of Mendocino.

I needed another day to explore Russian Gulch State Park for the beach and views.

Day 7- Redwood Trees -Avenue of the Giants

We headed two hours north to the MIGHTY redwood trees and the Avenue of the Giants. I’m convinced this is where the hobbits and fairies live. We hit every roadside tree-hugging attraction and famous drive-thru tree we could find. The Redwoods can’t be contained in words or images; it’s a spellbinding feeling. These trees captivated my imagination and heart; it’s worth every sacrifice to stand among them. As the day ended, we returned to Mendocino. I could spend a week walking the ancient redwoods.

Trip Extenders

• The Redwood National Park is another four hours north, so add two more days to explore more trees.
• If you have another day or two, Lassen Volcanic National Park is five hours from Mendocino.
• With more time, drive on into Oregon and Washington and explore the coast and Olympic National Park’s rainforest. Day 8- San Francisco

We had a long drive back to San Francisco for our 6 pm flight home.
