From lush rainforests and black-sand beaches to active volcanoes and coral reefs, Hawaii invites travelers to slow down and experience life in harmony with the sea.

Let’s discuss the best of each island to decide which island is best for you. We will travel to the most iconic attractions, hidden gems, animal interactions, and unique Hawaiian experiences. Finally, I’ll compile all the information into a Hawaii itinerary that can range from seven to fourteen days, along with more island-specific tips.

Best Hawaii Tip: Almost every popular place requires a parking or visitation reservation, so book as soon as the day opens on the official Hawaii State Parks Reservation System. Hawaii has limited visitors to a third of what they were at top attractions. If the reservation system opens at 7 am, then the spots are gone by 7: 20 am with 3,000 people trying to get 1,000 reservation slots.

Hawaii’s Iconic Attractions

Hawaii trip planners imagine visiting the breathtaking volcanoes, pristine beaches, and the famous rainforest drives. However, you may be coming for sea turtles, manta rays, or black or green-sand beaches? Repeat travelers, you are coming back for the food, I know. Trips are planned around Hawaii’s Iconic Attractions, so let’s start there.

Waikiki Beach

• Waikiki Beach – Hawaii’s most famous beach in Honolulu on O’ahu, with iconic views of Diamond Head. Honestly, this narrow beach was very crowded, felt high-energy, with a wall of skyscrapers across the street, and city traffic noise, so it didn’t meet my expectations. It’s a one-and-done for me. Miami’s South Beach is a close analogy. If you haven’t been to Miami, think of Atlanta with a beach.
  

Diamond Head State Monument

• Diamond Head State Monument– This extinct volcanic crater offers one of Oahu’s most famous hikes. The moderately challenging trail leads to panoramic views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. You need a reservation, and the 3-mile hike usually takes an hour. Being near Waikiki, Diamond Head draws the most foot traffic of any Hawaiian hike.
  

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

• Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – The Big Island is home to active volcanoes and otherworldly lava landscapes. Use the ParkWolf app to navigate every stop in the park. Some years you can see flowing lava, sometimes not. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the most visited natural wonder in Hawaii.
  

Pearl Harbor

• Pearl Harbor National Memorial – A powerful historic site commemorating the events of December 7, 1941, on O’ahu. Visitors can tour exhibits, see WWII artifacts, and take a boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, where the battleship’s remains still rest beneath the water. Pearl Harbor inspires a sacred feeling that stays with you for a lifetime as you peer into the ocean at the battleship.
• Most flights land on Oahu before heading to other islands, so 1.5 million visitors make reservations for the top attraction in Hawaii, Pearl Harbor.
  

Road to Hana

• Road to Hana– Get the Guide Along app that tells you what’s coming up.
• The 64-mile legendary drive winds through Maui’s tropical forest, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and charming roadside stands. The journey itself is the destination, with over 600 curves and dozens of one-lane bridges.
• Banana bread at Hana Farms (Mile Marker 31) is a must-stop.

Road to Hana Tips

• Make sure to leave early, fill up your gas tank, bring OFF, cash for roadside stands, and have a parking pass for Wai’anapanapa, the black sand beach.
• If you did not get a black beach reservation and want to see the beach or enjoy live tour guides, The Magic of Maui Experience can solve all your problems.
• The first waterfall is Twin Falls, at MM2, so the adventure begins immediately and takes all day. The Road to Hana is my favorite way to spend a day in Hawaii.
• The food trucks in Hana, from Uncle Russel’s Huli Huli Chicken to Bruddah Hutts BBQ and Thai Food by Pranee, are famous and reason enough to make the drive, so bring plenty of cash.

Na Pali Coast

• Nā Pali Coast – Towering sea cliffs and emerald valleys along Kauai’s coastline are a dream world. Na Pali is accessible by boat, helicopter, or hiking.
• You need reservations for day hikes. I tried hiking, and I don’t recommend it. It’s basically the wettest place on earth, and I read that 100 times. However, I still didn’t grasp that hiking in the wettest place on earth meant sliding around in mud and crossing rivers.
• Did I die? No, but plenty of people do. Was it worth it? Absolutely, I’m just warning you.

Haleakala National Park

• Haleakalā National Park – Famous for sunrise views above the clouds on Maui. Standing more than 10,000 feet above sea level, it feels like standing on the edge of the world. The darkness and stars give way to deep purple and fiery orange clouds, which resemble a fluffy ocean. Then the sun breaks through, flooding the volcanic crater with light. It’s a moving experience if you aren’t freezing to death.

Sunrise Tips

• Sunrise is windy and freezing, 20-30 degrees, so bring a jacket and water. Y’all, I read this cold weather advice, so I showed up with jeans and a sweatshirt and the blanket off the hotel bed. I still almost froze to death. Did I do my volcano hikes with a wind chill of 15 degrees? No, no, I’m going back to the warm beach.
• Sunrise at the top of a volcano means waking up at 2 or 3 a.m., depending on the time of sunrise, so plan a nap.
• You need vehicle reservations 60 days in advance for sunrise.
• After sunrise, you can hike the crater or join a tour. The tour groups riding straight down an active volcano on bikes and hoping the cars share the two-lane road is complete insanity to me. You can reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour and have sharp switchbacks and blind curves, which leads to death when you crash into a car or fly off the mountain. So, choose your activities wisely. Now, let’s go eat Hula Pie.

Hula Pie & Banana Bread

• Hula Pie & Banana Bread- I’m always dreaming of Hula Pie, an ice cream dessert consisting of a chocolate cookie crust piled high with macadamia nut ice cream and smothered in hot fudge and whipped cream. Then there’s the banana bread cooked in a hyper-moist atmosphere, with a tropical spin, like crushed pineapple baked in. The food is literally worth the trip alone, so you will find me at Duke’s on Waikiki or the Hula Grill in Maui eating my pie. As always, make dinner reservations in advance. I realize Hawaiian Shaved Ice, hole-less donuts, Haupia Pie, or the coconut syrup they pour over fruit-covered pancakes with banana butter could also be your reason for a return trip.
  

Hawaii’s Hidden Gems

Hawaii rewards travelers who venture beyond the tourist hotspots. Let’s visit the places without reservation requirements.

Waimea Canyon

• Waimea Canyon – Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” it offers dramatic views of Kauaʻi. It’s 10-miles long and 3,600 feet deep with a rust colored soil. You pay $10 to park and $5 per person, but no reservations are needed.
  

• Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach – A striking Big Island shoreline often visited by sea turtles. There’s no swimming. This is more of a beach for photography, but it’s free.
  

Ho’omaluhia Gardens

• Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden – A peaceful 400-acre rainforest garden on Oʻahu that’s free. The centerpiece is the lake. The garden is closed on Thursdays. It takes about 20 minutes if you drive straight through.
  

• Kalaupapa Peninsula – A remote and historically significant area on Molokaʻi. I listed this for my really adventurous readers who can get their permits, book their flights, and hike three miles to reach paradise.
  
• Papakōlea Green Sand Beach – Located on the Big Island, one of the few green-sand beaches in the world. This beach takes some work with a 5.5-mile round-trip hike. Locals may run a bumpy, off-road truck to the beach for a $20 to $30 fee.

Akaka Falls State Park

• Akaka Falls State Park – Easy 0.4-mile walk on a rainforest path on the Big Island that leads to a spectacular 442-foot waterfall. It’s probably the most photographed waterfall in Hawaii, so there’s a $5 per person fee.
  
• Ke’anae Peninsula is a short detour from the Road to Hana on Maui. The dramatic coastline and violent North Shore waves are the reason to detour. Always grab a banana bread snack at Aunty Sandy’s snack stand.

Honolulu

Honolulu blends urban energy with island beauty. As the state’s capital, it offers cultural institutions, historic landmarks, dining, and easy access to beaches and hiking trails—all within a tropical setting.

Small towns lean into their culture and community, delivering an authentic Hawaii experience.

Hāna

Located along Maui’s eastern coast, Hāna feels secluded and untouched. Its slow pace, lush surroundings, and cultural depth provide a glimpse into traditional island life away from resort crowds. The Road to Hana is Epic and the reason you came.

Hanalei

Hanalei is a charming, resort-free, surf town on the North Shore of Kauai, famous for its breathtaking 2-mile beach and emerald-green mountain backdrop. It blends mom-and-pop shops with upscale dining.

Best Hawaiian Nature Experience

Nā Pali Coast

Whether viewed by boat, helicopter, or trail, the Nā Pali Coast on Kaui is one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United States. Sheer cliffs plunge into the Pacific, revealing hidden beaches, waterfalls, and sea caves.

Snorkeling the Molokini Crater

The Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic caldera. The inside is a protected aquarium, perfect for beginner divers and snorkelers. It’s one of my favorite dive or snorkel trips. Basically, snorkel and experience the Hawaiian water.

Book all snorkeling trips in the morning since the ocean gets rougher and storms pop up in the late afternoon.

Best Animal Encounters

• Humpback whales (December- April off Maui, with February having the most whales)
• Snorkel with sea turtles and colorful fish at Turtle Canyon, about 2 miles offshore from Waikiki Beach on Oahu. Book your $100 tour two months in advance.
  
• Night snorkel with giant manta rays near Kailua-Kona on the Big Island is rated as a Top 10 Thing to do in your lifetime. Manta & Snorkel Kona has small charters with tours costing around $150. The Big Island has a resident population of 300 manta rays.

• Visit the Maui Ocean Center to see the largest living tropical reef aquarium with sharks, stingrays, and schools of fish.
  
• Fishing in Hawaii is a world-class experience offering deep-sea sportfishing for Blue Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. There’s shoreline fishing and freshwater fishing too.
  

Unique Experiences in Hawaii

Hawaii offers once-in-a-lifetime adventures.

• Watching the sunrise from Haleakalā’s summit
• Hiking through volcanic craters
• Attending a traditional luau- Old Lahaina Luau on Maui is my favorite. We also did Smith’s Garden Luau on Kauai, which was a fantastic experience.
• Luau’s are nice, dressy clothes type events, not shorts and t-shirts.
• Leis are sold everywhere, and I stored mine in a zip-lock bag with moist paper towels in the fridge so it would last the entire trip.

Surf School

• Helicopter flight over Kauai to see the Na Pali Coast
• Learn to surf in Waikiki with Stoke Drift Surf School, costing $120 and up.
• Eat shaved ice from a local stand – BEST EVER!!
  

• Bee Farm Tour at Hi Honey Farms lets you suit up and hold frames of bees, then taste different types of honey in Oahu. Appointments required
• Tour the Dole Plantation, learn about pineapples, and eat a Dole Whip on Oahu.
• Visit Kualoa Ranch and take the Jurassic Adventure or Movies Tour on Oahu that lasts half a day.

Best Time to Visit Hawaii

• The best time to visit Hawaii is May and October for good weather, the best hotel and airline deals, and low crowds.
• Coming in second place are the icky-feeling months of September, due to heat and no winds, and April, due to rain.
• It’s an expensive vacation to travel during rainy season, hurricane season, and packed-out crowds.
• The worst months for crowds are July, December, March (Spring Break), and August (hurricanes). Expect to pay 30% more for everything.
• Pro Tip: If you must travel during crazy July, stay on the Big Island’s Hilo side, and Kauai’s North Shore for better crowd control.
• January and February bring REAL Rain levels.

Hawaii Itinerary (10-14 Days)

Hawaii Vacation Tips

• Hawaii punishes procrastinators harder than any other destination. This is not the vacation to show up and decide what to do when you wake up. The best tours and restaurants are booked months in advance.
• Book your favorite attractions as soon as the system opens reservations and tours months in advance, since many sell out.
• We rented a car on every island and reserved it immediately. After the flights, you book a rental car. Car inventory is low, and you will pay four times the price if you rent when you land.
• With a long flight, make arrival day a beach day, then begin the itinerary.
• If you are traveling from the East Coast, plan a night in LA or San Diego to break up the 10-hour flight.
• Check Google Flights for the cheapest days to fly. Flying home on a Tuesday saved us $300 a person.
• For basic cost math, plan for all food to be double what you are used to paying.
• Many flights depart Hawaii late at night, so plan for the departure day. It’s better to pay for an extra night if you are departing at 7 pm. You can swim at the beach, have a fun day, then shower before departing by keeping your room.

Food Trucks

• With meals reaching $100 per person in restaurants, FOOD TRUCKS are winning the where to eat battle. Google the top food trucks on each Island and save money without compromising quality, since most owners were chefs in the restaurants.
• Tour companies will take you around each island if you want to avoid driving.
• We bought a lot of our souvenirs at Walmart or Costco.
• I love to snorkel, so I will fly my mask and a DRY SNORKEL. You can drown with the free ones on the snorkel boats.

Sunscreen

• Hawaii has banned oxybenzone and octinoxate, so leave those bottles at home.
• Bring a swim shirt. The sun is brutal.
• Over 50% of tourists get a sunburn within 48 hours of landing on the islands.

Let’s pull all this information together for the ultimate Hawaii vacation. If you only have seven days in Hawaii, I would visit Oahu or Maui.

Day 1: Oʻahu Itinerary

• Explore Waikiki Beach with your base in Honolulu.
• Pearl Harbor took us about two hours. Reserve tickets in advance or walk up to stand by.
• Dinner at Monkeypod, Roy’s, or my favorite Duke’s for Hula Pie- make reservations
• Sunset on a catamaran cruise. The sunset cruises come in all levels of a party. Sunset ranges from 5:30 to 7 pm, depending on the time of year.
• Another top location for sunset is Kapiolani Beach Park.
• Leonard’s Bakery has six locations because it really is that good.
  

Day 2: Oʻahu’s North Shore Itinerary

• Head out early, around 7 am, to avoid the crowds going to the North Shore.
• Grab an acai bowl at Haleiwa Bowls and walk the plantation-era shops.
• Next, at 9:30, head to Laniakea Beach to look for green sea turtles. Parking is across the street.

• 10:30 AM- Beach time at Waimea Bay, where you can jump off the famous rock in summer. If the parking is full, you can pay to park across the street at Waimea Valley. You can literally spend ALL day here.

• 12:20- Grab lunch at the iconic yellow Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. Bring cash.
• 2 pm- Watch the pros at the Pipeline. Stop at Ehukai Beach Park to watch the world’s deadliest waves.
• The Ehukai Pillbox Hike is one of the best sunset views. However, the steep hike is rated strenuous, so I’m headed to the beach view.

Matsumoto Shaved Ice

• 3:30 pm- Shaved Ice at Haleiwa’s Matsumoto Shaved Ice, a staple since 1951. The line is usually VERY long and worth it.
• 5 pm- eat famous Chocolate Haupia Pie from Ted’s Bakery on Sunset Beach.
• Grab dinner from a food truck at the Kahuku Roadside Food Court or in Waikiki.
• North Shore closes up early, with restaurants closed by 7 pm, and resorts are fewer and more expensive.
• The Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay Resort is an amazing option. However, the rates start at a grand a night.
• Going east out of Waikiki along the coastline takes 1.5 to 2 hours, versus going straight down the island in an hour.
• Obviously, you could easily add another day to better enjoy the North Shore.

Day 3: O’ahu’s East Adventure

• Hanauma Bay snorkeling is a famous marine preserve home to over 450 species of fish and sea turtles. The bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for conservation. Reservations are mandatory, booked online two days in advance, and sell out quickly. It’s absolutely worth the effort.
  
• Shark’s Cove- Another amazing snorkeling spot.
  
• Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is fully paved and a 2-mile round trip. It takes an hour or two with a 500-foot elevation climb for stunning views of the coastline, whales, and islets.
  

• Kailua’s Lanikai Beach is one of the world’s best beaches. Spend the day exploring the cute town and the beach. Then, you can hike the Pillbox Trail, rent a kayak, swim, and snorkel. However, there’s no parking lot since the beach is in a neighborhood. You have to park in a legal street parking spot, so arrive before 9 am. If you can’t find parking, head a mile down the road to Kailua Beach, which has plenty of parking, and walk back.
  
• Sunset at Diamond Head- need a parking reservation- gostateparks.hawaii.gov
  
• You can add several days to visit more of the North Shore with the following:
• The Kualao Ranch has movie and Jurassic Park tour options that everyone loves.
• Dole Plantation or a Bee Farm tour.
• There’s also the Green World Coffee Farm
• Tropical Farms Macadamia Nuts is open for tours.
  
• As a complete side note, for my nieces, if you want Hawaii-exclusive Lululemon, then arrive at the store at 10 am since they are sold out by 12 daily.

Day 4: Maui Itinerary

• Paia town, Ho’okipa Beach, for sleeping sea turtles and relaxing on the beach. The beach is only about 15 minutes from the airport and a great stop before your resort.
• Interisland flights are very quick at 45 minutes and cost around $80 per person. Turning in and getting a new rental car still takes three hours of your day to change islands.
  

Hawaii Food Trucks

• South Maui Gardens in Kihei packs 16 award-winning food trucks onto six acres. Sting lights, covered seating, live music, and a weekly hula show make for a perfect, affordable night out.
• The food truck with the most awards and the famous chef who cooked at the best restaurant on the island for 20 years is across from Costco, Thai Mee Up.
• The food truck Guy Fieri lost his mind over in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives crew is also near Costco at 70 Lono Avenue, Like Poke. He closes when he runs out of fresh fish, so people start lining up before he opens.
• Anyway, I could go on and on about the food trucks on all the islands.

Day 5: Road to Hana

Stop at waterfalls, black sand beach, banana bread and smoothie stands, and the bamboo forest. Use the Guide Along app for every mile update. The black sand is Pa’iloa Beach in Wai’anapanapa State Park and requires reservations 30 days in advance.

Day 6: Haleakalā National Park

Watch the sunrise and explore volcanic landscapes. Bring a parking reservation, coat, and a blanket, since it’s freezing waiting for sunrise. After an affordable lunch at the Paia Fish Market, spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach and going to the Old Lahaina Luau. If you want vacation family photos instead, try Pine & Palm Productions. You are living your dreams, so you might as well capture them.

Day 7: Maui Things to Do

Enjoy beach time, hiking, snorkeling, or fishing. Personally, I’m putting the rest of my time on Maui. I added Kaui to my next trip to Maui.

• Snorkel the Molokini Crater with a tour group.
• Walk the 4-mile round trip Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls at the end of the Hana Highway to a 400 ft waterfall.
• Walk the paved trail to the Iao Valley State Monument to the iconic 1,200-foot needle rising from the green valley.
• Stroll the Kapalua Coast Trail on the scenic 2.5-mile path that connects Kapalua Bay Beach to DT Fleming Beach Park.
• I spent a week on Ka’anapali Beach and snorkeled the reef at Black Rock, and it wasn’t long enough.
• Visit the Maui Ocen Center
  

Day 8: Kauai Itinerary

• Fly into Kaui and stay in Hanalei, then move for more days
• Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Pier, beach sunset
• For the most beautiful and secluded beach, that’s Ke’e Beach at the end of the road past Haena State Park. You need a reservation 30 days in advance. The Kalalau Trail begins near here for jaw-dropping, dizzying views of the Na Pali Coast.
  
• As with the other islands, food trucks such as Taco Libre and Tony’s Catch are ruling. The Pono Market also has great local food.
• I’ll be at Dukes eating Hula Pie.
• I felt like the water was colder for snorkeling in Kauai, maybe due to all the rain, clouds, and wind, so pack a swim shirt.
  

Day 9: Nā Pali Coast

• Take a boat or helicopter tour, hike Na Pali, or do all three. Super Raft Snorkeling Tour through Captain J’s up the Na Pali Coast.
• Then, a Waimea Canyon hike.
  

Things to Do in Kauai

• Mountain Tubing Adventure with an Innertube float through the sugar cane flumes
• Kayak the Wailua River and hike the rainforest to Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls), which is 120 feet tall.
• Snorkel Tunnels Beach with sea turtles
• Flat, 2-mile very scenic hike from the Grand Hyatt to Maha’ulepu Beach called Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail.
• Hike Waipoo Falls with a 3-mile round-trip path to the 80-foot double-tiered waterfall.
• Kipu Ranch Tour for ATV adventures.

Day 10: Home– I added more days to Maui on all my trips to dive and fish.

For a 14-day itinerary, just add another day to each island.

There’s no way to see Hawaii in one trip. The Big Island is last and could be swapped with Kauai on the itinerary.

Top Things to Do on the Big Island

1. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park – The Big Island is home to active volcanoes and otherworldly lava landscapes. Use the ParkWolf app to navigate every stop in the park. Some years you can see flowing lava, sometimes not. You can spend 4 hours or the whole day here hiking. Start on the Crater Rim Drive with the Visitor Center, lava tubes, and Kilauea overlook. With more time, take the Chain of Craters Road all the way to the ocean.

2. Night snorkel with giant manta rays near Kailua-Kona on the Big Island is rated as a Top 10 Thing to do in your lifetime. Manta & Snorkel Kona has small charters with tours costing around $150. If you want to view from land, The Mauna Kea Hotel has a private light set up over a manta feeding station.

3. Stargazing at the Summit of Mauna Kea with some of the best observatories in the world.

4. Visit a Seahorse or Octopus farm. However, these tours are getting a little pricey at $70 per person.

5. Visit the best beach on the island at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, which is the best place to stay on the island because of the beach.

Hawaii Itinerary Summary

• Our first trip was to Honolulu on Oahu and Maui.
• The second trip was to Maui and Kauai.
• Then, you have a feel for which island is your favorite to add to the Big Island for a third trip.
• It’s too much time in an airport to try to do three islands on one trip, in my opinion.
• Plan one event a day, then beach time and dinner reservations.

Budgets vary, so I’m giving you hotel and condo options on each island. Vrbo and Airbnb are always options. With restaurant meals costing $50 to $100 a person, most people want kitchenettes.

Oahu Lodging

• Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort
• Sheraton Waikiki with a high floor and ocean views to see over the island
• Aston Waikiki Beach Tower for condos
• For a budget choice, Embassy Suites by Hilton Waikiki Beach Walk hotel rooms include a microwave, mini fridge, and free breakfast, and area few blocks from the beach.
